Annette Streyl consistently engages with themes and models from architectural and art history, which she extracts from their urban or iconographic contexts and transposes into the present through paradoxical shifts in scale or material, or through surprising combinations, ultimately transforming them into new, independent visual works.
In a reverse process, Streyl turns the large into small and the hard into soft, the old into new — or vice versa. In every case, the result is unexpected. Everyday objects such as a dish towel are carved from enduring marble and thus ennobled, while “sublime” forms like an ancient column are toppled from their pedestal and recreated in cardboard.

Annette Streyl trabaja de manera constante con temas y referentes de la historia del arte y la arquitectura, los cuales extrae de su contexto urbano o iconográfico para transponerlos al presente mediante desplazamientos paradójicos de escala o material, o a través de combinaciones sorprendentes, transformándolos en nuevas obras visuales autónomas.
En un proceso inverso, Streyl convierte lo grande en pequeño y lo duro en blando, lo antiguo en nuevo — o justamente al revés. En todos los casos, el resultado es inesperado. Objetos cotidianos como un paño de cocina se tallan en mármol imperecedero y así se ennoblecen, mientras que lo “sublime”, como una columna antigua, es derribado de su pedestal y reproducido en cartón.
