Work statement
Following the path of 19th-century photographer Charles Kroehle, who supposedly vanished in the Peruvian Amazon, Arguiñe Escandón and Yann Gross immerse themselves in the jungle’s dense vegetation, guided by shamanic experiences and organic photography.
In Quichua, “Aya” means ghost, soul, or spirit.
Blending historical and contemporary images, Aya bridges the Amazon’s past representations with personal sensory experience. Sociologist Joel Vacheron describes it as an experiential initiation into the jungle’s plants, signs, and spirits—challenging the notion of a singular “we” and exploring photography beyond the human, where apparitions flow through bodies—human, plant, or mystical.
Alas (Serie Aya)
Siguiendo el camino del fotógrafo del siglo XIX Charles Kroehle, quien supuestamente desapareció en la Amazonía peruana, Arguiñe Escandón y Yann Gross se sumergen en la densa vegetación de la selva, guiados por experiencias chamánicas y fotografía orgánica.
En Quichua, “Aya” significa fantasma, alma o espíritu.
Fusionando imágenes históricas y contemporáneas, Aya conecta las representaciones pasadas de la Amazonía con la experiencia sensorial personal. El sociólogo Joel Vacheron lo describe como una iniciación experiencial en las plantas, signos y espíritus de la selva, desafiando la noción de un “nosotros” singular y explorando la fotografía más allá del ser humano, donde las apariciones fluyen a través de los cuerpos—humanos, vegetales o místicos.
Together, Escandón and Gross have published the photobook Aya (Editorial RM), which was a finalist for the Best Photography Book of the Year at PhotoEspaña 2020 and was shortlisted for the International Photobooks Singapore and the Lucie Photo Book Prize (New York).

Arguiñe Escandón (b. 1979, Bilbao) explores emotional connections, psychology, and sociology, merging fiction and reality in a mysterious imagery. She has been nominated for the Prix Elysée, Futures Photography, and Swiss Design Awards and received grants from Vegap and Spain’s Ministry of Culture. Her work has been shown at Les Rencontres d’Arles, Wilde Gallery, and more, and featured in Aperture Magazine, El País, Vogue Italia, and The Guardian.

Yann Gross (b. 1981, Switzerland) is an artist working with photography, video, and installation, exploring how humanity shapes its environment and identity. In 2008, he moved to Brazil for a reforestation project and has since split his time between Europe and the Amazon. He has won awards like the Festival de Hyères and the Luma Dummy Book Award Arles. His work has been shown at Aperture (NY), FOMU (Antwerp), and Les Rencontres d’Arles. He is currently an artist-in-residence at Casa de Velázquez, Madrid.
Yann Gross (b. 1981, Switzerland) es un artista que trabaja con fotografía, video e instalación, explorando cómo la humanidad moldea su entorno e identidad. En 2008 viajó a Brasil para un proyecto de reforestación y desde entonces divide su tiempo entre Europa y la Amazonía. Ha ganado premios como el Festival de Hyères y el Luma Dummy Book Award Arles. Su obra ha sido expuesta en Aperture (NY), FOMU (Amberes) y Les Rencontres d’Arles. Actualmente, es becado en la Casa de Velázquez, Madrid.
