Although the associations objects evoke in individuals may vary subjectively, within the repetitive rhythm of everyday life these associations often remain confined to the boundaries of the ordinary. Objects reduced to their use value become invisible through their function; their presence is only recognized once their context changes.

Toilet paper is one of these everyday objects that has become invisible. By placing this ordinary material at the center of his artistic practice, the artist has produced numerous serial works. These works are brought together under the title “Trans Layers.”

“Smiley,” which is part of this series, enables the material—detached from its habitual context of use—to acquire a new field of representation. Its ease of production and familiar form immediately draw the viewer in.

Sakir Gokcebag was born in 1965 in Denizli. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University. Gokcebag has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including at the Arp Museum – Remagen, CentrePasquArt – Switzerland, Martin-Gropius-Bau – Berlin, and Sotheby’s – London. The artist has received several awards, including the George Maciunas Prize, the Markus Lüpertz Prize, and the Leo Breuer Prize.
He currently lives and works in Hamburg.
