Curation Text:

Beauty is the other self

„Beauty is present in abundance in all areas of life and art, much more than the sense of recognizing and appreciating it. Perhaps it is precisely because the sense of the higher inner harmonies of beauty has been lost that so much is getting out of hand in society and politics – recently even in the former land of longing for lemons in bloom (Italy; editor’s note)“. Martin Seidel, editor of Kunstforum 286 , dedicates an entire volume to the derivation of this thesis under the title: Das Schöne – Plädoyer für ein eigensinniges Phänomen.

„Beauty is the other self“ uses artistic means to relate the concept of „beauty“ to socially relevant issues such as personal and cultural identity and the common good in the context of self-realization and its most negative escalation in war.

Walter Benjamin once formulated: „Beauty is neither the envelope nor the enveloped object, but beauty is the object in its envelope.

„Beauty is the other self“ also describes the search for beauty, „which is fundamentally different from the increasingly sophisticated deceptive strategies of good looks on which careers are built in all areas of life and also in art“.  In the Beuysian sense, his idea of the highest concept of art would correspond to such a quest, which is fulfilled in the participation of the individual in shaping the future of society as a whole.“

Goethe already explored the inner conflict of human nature in the character of Doctor Faustus: „Two souls dwell oh! in my breast… “ . In this way, the participating artists develop an arc of tension that ranges from aesthetic fascination to the human ability to transform suffering into beauty. This is also part of the playful and enabling space of art and beauty.“

The work was created from a documentation video of the mixed-media installation „Thinking about me“ (T.a.m.). For the installation, two visually overlapping self-portraits of the artist were projected onto the wall of a former slaughterhouse:

The first portrait is created by an experimental apparatus using overhead projection: three-dimensional miniatures circulate in a glass bowl, driven by a pump system and placed on the projector glass plate. The shadows of the miniatures, e.g. pedestrians, scooter riders, a wedding couple, are projected into the silhouette of a Janus-faced self-portrait profile (in blue/yellow), which lies as a silhouette on the glass plate.

The second portrait shows the artist’s head made of transparent synthetic resin. The vertical rotation of the head and the horizontal circulation of the miniatures interpenetrate the projection surface and create a visualized model of flowing thoughts: they appear, transform into ever new combinations and disappear again – a visualization of the „camera in the head“. Initially realized as a light projection in 2018 in Ukrainian colors, the work was overtaken by the reality of events.
